In May 2017, the Bundeswehr embarked on an ambitious upgrade program for its Leopard 2 main battle tanks, resulting in the development of the Leopard 2 A7V. This upgrade builds upon the A7 variant, incorporating several enhancements to improve survivability, firepower, and overall combat efficiency

Enhanced Armor and Survivability:

• Additional Hull Front Armor: The A7V features extra armor on the front hull, significantly increasing its protection against modern threats.

• New Running Gear: To compensate for the added weight of the extra armor, the tank is equipped with new running gear, ensuring mobility and stability on various terrains.

Firepower and Weaponry:

• L/55 120mm Smoothbore Gun: The tank retains the L/55 120mm smoothbore gun from the A6 variant, which can fire the latest generation of armor-piercing ammunition. This gun can engage enemy armor at distances up to five kilometers

• Advanced Ammunition: The A7V can utilize Rheinmetall's new programmable DM11 multipurpose round, enhancing its versatility and effectiveness on the battlefield.

Improved Visibility and Targeting:

• Third-Generation Optronic Cameras: The tank is equipped with advanced third-generation optronic cameras, providing high-resolution imagery for reconnaissance and situational awareness.

• Enhanced Rear-View Camera: A new rear-view camera improves visibility for the driver, especially in poor visibility conditions.

• New Turret Rear Basket: The A7V includes a new turret rear basket for better storage and accessibility of equipment.

Operational Efficiency:

• Auxiliary Power Unit (APU): The tank features a more powerful APU, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing the strain on the main engine.

• Digital Command and Control: The A7V is integrated with the Battle Management System (BMS), enabling seamless communication and coordination with other units on the battlefield.

Deployment and Upgrades:

• 104 Tanks Upgraded: A total of 104 existing Leopard 2 tanks are being upgraded to the A7V standard. The first upgraded tanks began reaching units in September 2021.

• Testing and Validation: The upgraded tanks underwent rigorous testing, including tactical suitability tests at the Senne training area in East Westphalia.
