Renowned for its thick armor plate and powerful 88mm main gun, the King Tiger was developed in response to the growing threat posed by Russian tanks.In February 1943, Germany initiated the development of this tank, resulting in rival prototypes from the Henschel and Porsche firms. The Porsche-designed turret featured a distinctive rounded front section and narrow shell, setting it apart from the angular Henschel design. With 100mm thick frontal armor and 80mm thick side panels, the Porsche turret housed the formidable Type 43 L71 88mm high-velocity main gun. Powering this behemoth was the Maybach HL230 P30 V-12 cylinder liquid-cooled engine, generating 700 horsepower.Although the Henschel model was selected for mass production, Porsche had already produced 50 turrets for their version of the tank. Despite the armor thickness concerns and complex tooling required for the Porsche turret's rounded contour sculpturing, its superior performance allowed the completed turrets to be deployed to the frontlines.
